Made in the Bering Sea area of Western Alaska during the late 1800s to early 1900s,
these magical and beautiful carvings in walrus ivory were created for utilitarian uses.
Even the most workaday items were imbued with spiritual designs intended to honor
the animals that enabled the Eskimos to stay alive in a very harsh and unforgiving world.

Of special appeal is the tiny figure which may have adorned a hunting visor. The
collection of eight toggles in the form of endearing bear heads with inlaid eyes and
detailed features, are my particular favorites in the collection.
